Popis
A short trip to the town Luebeck situated at the Traver River, which is the second largest city in Schleswig-Holstein and the largest German port on the Baltic Sea. It was for several centuries the the main town ("Queen") for the Hanseatic League - the main trade rival during the Middle Ages was another important port, the town Stralsund (e.g. compare pictures of town halls in both towns). The first settlement around Luebeck was during the last Ice Age. The town was founded by Count of Schauenberg and Holstein Adolf II in 1143. The town was given a ruling council by emperor Barbarossa that survived into the 19th century, emperor Frederick II elevated the town to an Imperial Free City (Free City of Luebeck). Emperor Charles IV. named Lübeck one of the five "Glories of the Empire", a title shared with Venice, Rome, Pisa and Florence (in 1375).
